COMMISSIONED IN 2013 TO CREATE 3 SCULPTURES FROM WASTE TO USE IN THE EDUCATION CENTER AT WOY WOY TIP
PORTAL TO THE UNIVERSE
Col Henry 2013
Size
Approx. 4.5 meters high
Materials
Recycled water pipes from the Mangrove/ Mardi Water Project.
The pipes where used to make a security fence around the work yard, and were removed with a bobcat and badly damaged. They were recycled by reclaiming the usable straight lengths and value adding by curve and rolling each individual element.
The large black ring is actually a section of the main water transfer pipe used in the project.
Inspiration
The combination of the curved elements creates an abstract and organic form, allowing the viewer to ‘Tell Their Story’ as to what the work represents.
What do you think it is?

‘Recycled Plastics’ were used in this work to emphasis a major consumable material that generally takes a long time, if ever to decompose. The plastic parts are mostly long lasting, and came from a pool water filter, an air conditioning ducting system, and waste pipes used by telecommunication companies. Some recycled steel was also used from an old above ground pool and a crate that was used to transport equipment to Australia from China. These were chosen as they all are high maintenance, high energy usage, and rarely used for more than a minor portion of their lifespan.
Inspiration
The animal completely belongs to the viewer. It resembles an elephant, a horse, a unicorn, a giraffe, a donkey and a space ship, What can you see??
This animal is extinct now because it recycled its own waste – note it sucks for from its stomach, and re eats it. This is a major principle of ‘SUSTAINABILITY’, but the system and concept, have to be sound and well thought out to ensure long lasting recyclability.
REUSE, RECYCLE, REDUCE
Col Henry 2013
Size
Approx. 6 meters high
Materials
Recycled pipes from a local well know business. These red pipes where re sized to suit the project, and show their age by leaving the original paint in tact. The signs were made from an old above ground pool, and the sheets of perforated colorbond were discarded on the ‘Longshop’, from a local building project. The reclaimed bamboo is topped with packing tape used to deliver large sheets of steel to the Artists workshop. This would normally be discarded. These tapes give an interesting ‘Kinetic Feature’ as they move in the breeze without using energy.
Inspiration
The three words – REDUCE, RECYCLE AND REUSE – were used to emphasis why this project was conceived, and the other three words on the signage panels are ‘Jumbled’ to create new and ‘funny words, allowing the viewer to interact with the work and take on ownership. Once they get the significance of the jumbled words, ‘they become the holder of the secret’, passing the information, on to generations to come. Did you find what the words mean?
