PROJECT 3 ‘SPIRIT OF NOORAT’ 2015 Public Commission – Major Public Artwork, Noorat, Corangamite Shire Street Scape upgrade, site specific works, installed March 2015
Medium: Stainless Steel Size 4.5 meters tall,
This work was created with Community Consultation, including Primary and Secondary School students. This small town with a big history, was envisaged as a potential major center in country Victoria, but as progress marched by, the town has shrunk in residents, but not ‘Community Spirit’, or the commercial farming importance of the area.
"Meeting with the Community Steering Group allowed a vast amount of potential information to filter through the artists imagination, until a 5th generation resident, who happens to own a large dairy farm, and the old volcano, Mt Noorat, casually mentioned that in the 5 generation of ownership of the farmlands, there had always been eagles nesting in a tree, every year, in the Volcanoes centre". The pristine nature of the surroundings, and the significance of the story, where so strong, that this inspirational comment, formed the basis for the work.
The work is in a park opposite the local Primary School, and it was quickly recognised that a functional ‘seat’ was needed, and asked for, and a ‘play object’ be available for the students to interact with, as well as, a strong ‘sculptural’ comment, recognising the importance of Community.
The final works lower element, is an abstraction of the mountain, while an organically ‘hand formed’ column, made from a stainless steel that is uniquely patinaed by the artist to look like wood, gives a great symbolic connection of both strength and the natural environment. Fixed at the top of the 3 meter column is an abstract rendition of the actual Mt Noorat Eagles Nest, being a mere 150 years old.
The work uses a ‘Portable Footing’ filled with concrete on site to reduce install costs and inconvenience.Marine grade stainless steel, with both mirror polished and satin polished surfaces, ‘Rust’ patinaed stainless steel 'Organic Column'.
