‘SUN, WIND AND RAIN’ 2013
Medium: 316 Marine grade stainless steel,
Size: up to 7 meters tall
Public Commission, Mabo Library, James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland
The work was themed around the ideal of ‘Sustainability’, and important and highly regarded principle practiced and taught in this world class institution.
There elements standing up to 7 meters tall, describe Sun, Wind and Rain, relating to important 'Sustainability' principles
The ‘Sun’ element features LED controlled lighting, creating enigmatic and unpredictable variations in the ‘mode’ conditions. These lights will be eventually powered by solar panels when final work is completed in this major overall upgrade of the facility.
The ‘Wind’ element has ‘leaves’, inspired by the local Almond Tree, and move in the wind, while the ‘Rain’ element uses a misting feature that requires a small amount of power, and low quantities of water to create a cooling and engaging ‘MIST’ around the work – this feature will also be powered by solar in the near future, with water used from roof catchment.
