Works installed at the Swell Sculpture Festival on Currumbin Beach Sept 2011
ART can - but not always - lead the intellectual conversation and question social issues, at many levels. This work is about ‘Community’, - Sometimes we don't support each other as well as we should.
The considered placement of the 5 elements, some looking away, others interacting, and some are even looking in both directions, are designed to evoke an ethereal aura or presence, while the enigma of 'what they represent', helps to open a connection in the viewer, were they can be involved, and interact at an emotional level.
Whimsical and joyful at first glance, these works relate on a higher level to the discerning eye, allowing questioning of the theme, and even encouraging thought relating to other themes or conceptual issues relating to the visual experience.
Colours use subversive relationships to enhance the experience, and the 'Head Gear', being 'Kinetic', moves in the breeze, creating a changing 'Artboard' that can tap into 'Memory' and 'Creation of New Thought' in the viewers reality; their perception, their answer to this quiz.
The works are carved from a ‘ROYAL SPECIES’ Australian Hardwood commonly known, as ‘IRON BARK’. Known for its strength, durability, and long lasting nature. Other materials include 316 marine grade stainless steel, and copper.
They stand approximately 4 meters to 4.5 meters high and would normally require a footprint of 6 meters x 4 meters minimum. Each of the five (5) element weights approximately 150 kg.
The works are coated on the timber surfaces with a high quality exterior grade timber oil.
The coloured sections have been painted with high quality, long lasting, UV stabilized, exterior enamel paints.
